Here at Dr. Mariano Busso’s aesthetic dermatology clinic, we like to empower patients with information about the treatments and procedures we offer. That way, our patients can make informed decisions about how to improve their appearance and increase their feelings of confidence and well-being.
This includes answering lots of patient questions. Often, the best way to answer a question is with another question. Such is the case when we are asked: “Should I get dermal fillers?” Well, let us ask some questions in response:
- Do you want to counteract the volume loss that is a natural part of the aging process and a primary cause of wrinkles?
- Do you want to restore fullness to flat or sunken cheeks and temples?
- Do you want to reduce prominent vertical lip lines?
- Would you like to smooth out creases and furrows in your chin?
- Are you looking to improve the general contours throughout your face?
- Would you be interested in a safe, proven, convenient, and non-invasive way to accomplish all of the above?
If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then the answer to whether you should get dermal fillers is a resounding and unequivocal yes.
Dermal fillers are injected into the skin, as with Botox treatments. Unlike Botox, dermal filler injections tend to address imperfections in the lower two-thirds of the face, plumping features such as the cheeks, lips, chin, and other areas.
Fillers work by attracting water to the injection site and jumpstarting collagen production at and around the treatment area. Along with another protein called elastin, collagen is what gives our skin a healthy texture and shape, and increasing the amount of collagen in your skin will improve your skin’s volume and texture. In combination with the filler itself, this boost in collagen production increases the volume of the area under the skin, stretching the skin and thus reducing and fading wrinkles.
The treatment itself can last from 15 to 45 minutes, and patients can go home immediately thereafter. While there may be some discomfort during or immediately after dermal filler injections, it is a largely painless procedure as most fillers are infused with lidocaine to help minimize tenderness. Fillers typically remain in the skin for six to 18 months, with the improvement in your appearance lasting for the same length of time.
