Kybella: What to Expect

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on August 20, 2018 by drbussoAugust 17, 2018

kybellaDoubles may be great for a game of tennis or cocktails, but a double is a loathsome and frustrating thing to have associated with your chin. A double chin is one of the most common facial imperfections that we hear patients discuss at our Miami-Coconut Grove aesthetic dermatology clinic. It is also one of the hardest problems to fix on your own, even if you eat the healthiest diet and exercise regularly. Fortunately, we offer a safe, effective, minimally invasive treatment that can dramatically improve the appearance of a double chin without needing to resort to invasive surgery or liposuction.

Kybella is a revolutionary, FDA-approved treatment that can dramatically improve the profile and appearance of moderate to severe fat accumulation below the skin. As we age, many of us develop this kind of fat deposit  – called submental fat – because of our genes, which means that a fix is hard to come by naturally.

How Does Kybella Fix Double Chins?

Deoxycholic acid is a natural compound found in human bile which helps break down fat we consume by destroying fat cell membranes. Kybella is a synthetic version of this fat-destroying compound which works on the subcutaneous fat cells under the chin. It kills fat cells which are then naturally eliminated by your body, along with the injected Kybella, over the course of several weeks while surrounding tissues remain unaffected.

Kybella Treatment

The number of Kybella treatments and injections you will need depends on the amount of submental fat you want to lose and the chin profile you desire. One to five treatments is typically required, with each session involving the injection of one to two vials of Kybella. These sessions, which last approximately five to ten minutes, are usually scheduled about a month apart.

After receiving a Kybella injection, common side effects can include temporary swelling, numbness, pain, redness, bruising, and areas of hardness in the treated area. Any swelling typically peaks at 24 hours after the treatment and can last from two days to three weeks.

Since Kybella completely disintegrates fat cells, the effects should be permanent. Retreatment is typically not required, and many patients see visible contouring on their chin after just two treatments.

10 Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dark Circles

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on July 30, 2018 by drbussoJuly 27, 2018

Dark CirclesIf eyes are the windows to the soul, then dark circles or bags under the eyes are unsightly curtains which can make your soul feel and skin look older than you actually are. While professional treatment may be needed to eliminate or minimize dark circles or bags in some folks, there are plenty of effective home remedies which can do the trick in the majority of cases.

If you want to get rid of those curtains which are obscuring your eyes and making you feel less than wonderful, try these one or more of these ten simple but effective natural treatments:

  • Get some sleep. Since the skin under your eyes is extremely thin, whatever is going on under the surface is prone to be visible above. When you don’t get enough restful sleep, the blood vessels and capillaries under your eyes may dilate, creating a dark tint. This may also cause puffiness, as fluids can leak out into the skin. What’s the solution to this problem? Get more sleep.
  • Sleep on your back. To keep those fluids from pooling and creating dark circles, sleep on your back and elevate your head by using an extra pillow
  • Tea time. Put a damp, cool tea bag under each or your eyes for a few moments. The tannic acid in tea leaves will help some of the fluid to retract and capillaries to shrink.
  • Keep it cool. Cold is excellent for reducing inflammation and the swollen blood vessels under your eyes. Take some cucumber or potato slices, a cold washcloth or a gel eye mask, place them on your closed eyes and leave them there for 10-20 minutes.
  • Take an antihistamine. Congestion leads to blood vessel dilation, which leads to a darker appearance underneath the eyes. Similarly, hay fever or allergies can have the same effect. A good antihistamine can help reduce congestion and reduce the discoloration that it causes.
  • Keep hydrated. When your body doesn’t get enough water, it holds on to the water it has, which can cause puffiness and bags under the eyes. Drinking eight glasses of water a day, not only will help with your appearance but will also keep your entire body functioning optimally.
  • Stop smoking. There are 1000 reasons to quit smoking, and getting rid of dark circles is one of them.
  • Pump up the iron. Iron deficiency decreases the flow of oxygen in your blood, stifling the tissues underneath the eyes. Increase the iron in your diet by eating iron-rich foods such as red meat, poultry, pork, seafood, spinach, and
  • Vitamin C. If you want strong, healthy, and more youthful-looking skin, you need to boost your collagen levels. Insufficient amounts of collagen can lead to wrinkles and sagging skin, including the skin under your eyes. Vitamin C is an effective way to increase your body’s collagen level. Nuts, leafy greens like spinach and kale, berries and citrus fruits, and seeds are all excellent sources of vitamin C.
  • Vitamin B12. An inadequate amount of vitamin B12 can cause anemia. Two common symptoms of anemia are pale skin and tiredness, both of which can accentuate dark under-eye circles. Add foods rich in B12 to your diets, such as meats, seafood, and leafy green vegetables.

How to Prepare for Your Lip Filler Consultation

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on July 9, 2018 by drbussoJuly 6, 2018

lip augmentationWhen you meet with a physician, it is not uncommon to have questions about your condition, your prognosis, or treatment options and possible side effects of those treatments, to name a few.  When you meet with a doctor (and it should be a doctor) to discuss lip augmentation and lip fillers, the same principles apply. If you are interested in improving the appearance and volume of your lips through these safe, effective and popular treatments, you’ll want to be prepared before and at your initial consultation.

Before your consultation, it helps to have a basic understanding of what lip fillers are. They are injections into your lips which increase their volume and result in larger, fuller, and more youthful looking lips.

At Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami-Coconut Grove aesthetic dermatology clinic, we offer many different lip augmentation procedures, and several different lip fillers including Restylane Silk, which was the first FDA-approved treatment specifically designed to treat lips and the lines around them. Restylane Silk is designed for precise lip shaping and for smoothing lines around the mouth to create a natural look. Similarly, Juvéderm Volbella is a filler designed specifically to enhance the volume of the lip, and Dr. Busso was among the first cosmetic physicians to introduce this fantastic product to patients in the U.S.

Armed with some basic knowledge, you can make your initial consultation productive, efficient, and informative by taking these additional steps:

  • Be ready to tell the doctor why you are there. That is, you’ll want to be able to articulate what imperfections you would like to address such as lip lines, volume loss, or lifting “Cupid’s Bow.”
  • Conversely, tell the doctor any concerns you have about how your lips will appear after the treatment, such as worries about “duck lips” (which are generally not an issue with today’s advanced lip filler products).
  • Ask the doctor what treatments they provide, which one they would recommend for your particular needs and circumstances, and why they believe that their recommended treatment is the right one for you.
  • Ask them to explain the treatment procedure, recovery process, and any potential complications and side effects.
  • Ask them about their experience and history with lip fillers and ask them if they have any photographs which show lips before and after treatments they’ve performed.
  • Tell them about any allergies, medications, conditions, or medical history which could impact their evaluation of treatment options.

How to Combat Lip Lines and Wrinkles

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on May 14, 2018 by drbussoMay 11, 2018

How to Combat Lip Lines and Wrinkles Loose lips may sink ships, as the saying goes, but lip lines and wrinkles can sink your feelings about your appearance. These imperfections around your mouth are an inevitable conseqence of the aging process. Your skin loses elasticity as you age, making lines and wrinkles more visible as years go by. Fortunately, advanced cosmetic procedures and treatments can help reverse this process, reducing the visibility of lip lines and wrinkles and restoring a youthful, healthy, and natural appearance.

Here at Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami-Coconut Grove aesthetic dermatology clinic, we offer several different and effective options for individuals who want to create volume and even skin tone around their lips.

What Are Lip Lines?

There are different types of lip lines which are caused by different factors:

  • Smile Lines. These are lines that stretch from the bottom of the nostril to the corner of the mouth that resemble parentheses. Medically referred to as nasolabial lines, smile wrinkles inherently materialize after years of regular movements such as smiling, talking, and chewing.
  • Marionette lines. These vertical wrinkles develop at the corners of the mouth and can make people appear angry or upset even when relaxed. These are also referred to as “frown lines” due to the expression they mimic.
  • Vertical lines.A naturally occurring sign of aging, these lines become more pronounced in smokers. Constantly pursing your lips to inhale cigarettes tends to stretch out the skin around the mouth, while nicotine decreases blood flow and makes skin appear thinner. After years of these smoking-induced side effects, vertical lines slowly become more pronounced.

Treatment Options

Regardless of how your lip lines and wrinkles occurred, we offer safe and proven techniques which target these unsightly marks and rejuvenate the skin to restore elasticity and youthful appearance. These include:

Laser Resurfacing

Our laser skin tightening treatments offer a non-invasive option that lifts and tightens the wrinkles around the mouth and other areas of the face. Laser resurfacing can be applied to any area of the body where skin sags but is most commonly used on the cheeks and neck area. Laser resurfacing does not require much recovery time because it does not necessitate cutting or stitching.

Dermal Fillers

Injectable fillers are used to treat signs of aging underneath the skin’s surface. Fillers are safe and effective at restoring volume for natural-looking results without being as invasive as facelifts or surgical tucks. Juvederm Voluma is a gel made of hyaluronic acid (hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your body) that provides instant results to those struggling with lip lines due to aging and/or smoking.

Restylane Silk, another leading dermal filler, is the first FDA-approved treatment specifically designed to target lip lines. Restylane Silk’s unique formula provides accurate shaping around curved areas like the lips for a more natural, soft look. If you’re struggling with wrinkles around your mouth, ask about this new, innovative, and effective lip enhancement treatment.

Dysport or Xeomin

These FDA-approved injectable treatments, similar to Botox, are injected directly into the site of wrinkles to prevent the underlying muscles from contracting. They are particularly effective for wrinkle elimination in areas such as crows’ feet, between the eyes – glabella (aka the 11’s), smoker-lines, lip wrinkles, laugh lines, and neck wrinkles.

Schedule Your Lip Line and Wrinkle Treatment in Miami

Whether you choose laser resurfacing, dermal fillers, or injectables like Dysport or Xeomin, Dr. Mariano Busso will help you understand how your lip lines formed, and how your lips can be safely and effectively restored. For a youthful appearance and a more confident, fresh face, call Dr. Busso at 305-857-0144 or book an appointment online.

What Are Age Spots and How Are They Treated?

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on May 7, 2018 by drbussoMay 4, 2018

Age SpotsIf the term “sun spots” wasn’t already taken by the sun itself, it is likely that it is the term we would use to describe what we instead call “age spots,” the flat, tan, or brown areas of skin which often appear on the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. Those areas are the parts of the body that are most heavily and frequently exposed to the sun, which is the main factor that leads to the appearance of age spots. But age spots do in fact become more frequent and pronounced as we get older. While age spots are not harmful, they can be unattractive and unwelcome, which is why plenty of people get treatments to reduce their visibility.

What Do Age Spots Look Like?

Age spots can appear at any age and on people of all skin types, though they are more common in people over the age of 50 and those who have a lighter skin tone. Age spots appear:

  • As flat, oval areas of increased pigmentation
  • Usually tan, brown or black
  • On skin that has had the most sun exposure over the years, such as the backs of hands, tops of feet, face, shoulders and upper back

Is It an Age Spot of a Sign of Skin Cancer?

As noted, age spots are of no medical concern and do not require medical treatment. The same cannot be said about melanoma, however. A common problem many people have is distinguishing between unattractive age spots and signs of potentially fatal skin cancer.

One person dies of melanoma every hour, according to SkinCancer.org. If you notice dark spots, take time to check for melanoma at home. Err on the side of caution if you are uncertain whether the discolored area of skin is cancerous or not and schedule a skin cancer evaluation with an experienced dermatologist as soon as you can since early detection and treatment can dramatically increase the odds of beating skin cancer.

How Are Age Spots Treated?

Early detection and treatment is not only a big plus for identifying and fighting cancer, it can also make treating age spots more effective. As with most skin conditions, early detection and correction may lead to better outcomes for lessening the appearance of age spots.

At Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami-Coconut Grove aesthetic dermatology clinic, we offer several products and technologies which can safely and effectively reduce the appearance of age spots and return skin to its even, natural tone.

One such treatment is Obagi® Nu Derm. The Nu-Derm System is an anti-aging therapy that penetrates below the skin’s surface to transform skin cell functions at the cellular level and correct the damage within, revealing healthy, younger-looking skin. Dr. Busso recommends the Obagi® Nu Derm System for men and women who want to treat age spots, fine lines, rough skin, skin laxity, redness, sallowness, and other instances of hyperpigmentation (discoloration).

The Most Popular Non-Invasive Cosmetic Treatments

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on April 9, 2018 by drbussoApril 3, 2018

botox injectionsEven though most cosmetic surgery is elective, most patients looking to improve their appearance and address issues of concern would elect a non-surgical alternative if it was safe, less burdensome, and could provide equally impressive results. That’s why at Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami aesthetic dermatology clinic, we specialize in non-surgical, minimally invasive therapies that rejuvenate skin, restore a youthful appearance, and boost confidence without scalpels and sutures.

Non-invasive treatments are typically less expensive than surgery and definitely require less recovery and downtime. Over the past decade, innovations and technological advancements have made non-surgical alternatives to cosmetic surgery more popular and effective than ever before. At our clinic, three of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatments are:

Botox

Botox is currently the most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure in the United States, ahead of soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion. In 2015 alone, 6.7 million Botulinum Toxin Type A procedures were performed.

We use Botox treatments to fight a wide range of aesthetic imperfections in men and women of all ages, such as treating fine lines and wrinkles including crow’s feet, lip wrinkles, laugh lines, neck wrinkles, glabella (between the eyes) lines and smoker lines.

Botox treatments are popular not only because they are powerfully effective, but because they are also quick (between 10 and 30 minutes), painless, require minimal recovery time, and deliver noticeable results in a matter of days.

Dermal Fillers

Another terrific and non-invasive way to improve your appearance and revitalize your skin is through dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm or Radiesse®

While Botox treatments address lines, wrinkles, and other imperfections by targeting the muscles responsible for causing them, dermal fillers work by plumping facial features to counteract volume loss that is a natural part of aging and a primary cause of wrinkles.

Like Botox, dermal fillers are injected into the skin. Unlike Botox, dermal filler injections tend to address issues in the lower two-thirds of the face, plumping facial features such as the cheeks, lips, chin, and other areas.

Dermal fillers typically remain in the skin for six to 18 months. They work by attracting water to the injection site and increasing collagen production at and around the treatment area. In combination with the filler itself, these effects increase the volume of the area under the skin, stretching the skin and thus reducing and fading wrinkles.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel, when performed by a skilled, highly trained, and licensed medical professional, is a safe and effective way to restore your skin to its natural beauty.

Its primary and most noticeable impact comes from the removal of damaged outer layers of skin to reveal fresh, smoother skin which hasn’t been damaged by the sun, wind or other elements. But the benefits of a chemical peel on skin tone and appearance goes beyond that. A chemical peel can also help skin care products work better, end acne, soften scars, and reduce dark circles under the eyes.

Fat Reduction

Getting rid of unwanted pounds takes effort, but almost everyone who wants to reduce fat could use a little help. This especially true in areas prone to stubborn fat deposits such as those which cause a double-chin.

We offer two great non-invasive fat reduction treatments. For love handles and thighs, Vanquish is effective at reducing body fat using multipolar radio frequency technology. Vanquish is a completely painless, non-surgical, and non-invasive procedure. It involves four sessions, each 75 minutes long. The machine doesn’t even physically touch your body. No needles, scalpels, anesthesia, or medications are involved. But it works.

If you are looking to get rid of that double chin, Kybella is a revolutionary, proven, safe, and non-invasive treatment which dramatically improves the profile and appearance of moderate to severe fat accumulation below the skin. Our own Dr. Mariano Busso was invited to be among the first physicians in the United States to introduce Kybella to patients after it obtained FDA approval. Kybella injections use a synthetic compound which replicates the body’s natural fat-destroying compounds and essentially sets them to work on the fat cells under the chin. This treatment is rapidly growing in popularity here in South Florida and across the country.

Skin Tightening

Laser skin tightening is a safe, non-invasive procedure that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging while tightening and lifting the skin for a younger and fuller appearance. This treatment can be used to treat all areas of the face and body but is most commonly performed on the cheeks and neck.

Many patients choose laser skin tightening for its slimming, firming effects that can be achieved using much less invasive means than procedures such as facelifts or neck lifts. Some patients seeking body tightening may choose to undergo laser skin tightening as an alternative to more invasive procedures such as liposuction or a tummy tuck, as laser treatment delivers noticeable results with significantly less pain and recovery time.

Dark Circle Reduction

We offer procedures which can help you get rid of those dark circles or bags under your eyes. Lower Eyelid Rejuvenation and Dark Circles Reduction is designed for patients with specific complaints of under-eye wrinkling, lower eyelid drooping, and prominent bags under the eyes. Dr. Busso’s unique Eyelid Rejuvenation is customized to each patient’s individual needs, using a combination of techniques, including Botox for a natural looking eyebrow lift, dermal filler, PRP to reduce volume loss in adjacent areas, ThermiRF for skin tightening, and fractional laser resurfacing to improve skin texture and color.

The Science Behind Kybella

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on March 19, 2018 by drbussoMarch 14, 2018

If you have a double chin, you could eat the healthiest diet and follow the most rigorous workout regimen but still be stuck with this common and frustrating imperfection. Many of us develop fat below the chin – called submental fat – as we age. It is usually a matter of genetics, and it used to be something you could do very little about unless you opted for invasive surgery or liposuction. But not anymore.

A revolutionary, proven, safe, and non-invasive treatment is available that dramatically improves the profile and appearance of moderate to severe fat accumulation below the skin. Kybella, first approved by the FDA in 2015, is an immensely popular double chin solution. In fact, our own Dr. Mariano Busso was invited to be among the first physicians in the United States to introduce Kybella to patients after it obtained FDA approval.

What is Kybella and How Does It Work?

Kybella contains a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a compound found in human bile. In its natural role in the digestive tract, deoxycholic acid helps break down fat we consume by destroying the membranes of fat cells. Kybella takes this fat-destroying compound and essentially sets it to work on the subcutaneous fat cells under the chin. Fat cells are killed and are naturally eliminated by your body over the course of several weeks while surrounding tissues remain unaffected. The injected Kybella also follows the same path out of the body, getting metabolized and ultimately eliminated as waste.

What is Involved in Kybella Treatment?

How many treatments and injections of Kybella you will need depends on the amount of submental fat you want to lose and your desired chin profile. Typically, one to five treatment sessions may be required, with each session involving the injection of one to two vials of Kybella. These treatment sessions, which last approximately five to ten minutes, are usually spaced a month or so apart.

After receiving a Kybella injection, the most common side effects include temporary swelling, pain, numbness, bruising, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. Any swelling will typically peak at 24 hours after the treatment and can last from two days to three weeks.

Since Kybella completely destroys fat cells, the effects should be permanent. Retreatment is typically not required, and many patients see visible contouring after just two treatments.

How is Juvéderm Different Than Other Dermal Fillers?

How is Juvéderm Different Than Other Dermal Fillers? Dermal filler injections are some of the most popular services Dr. Mariano Busso provides at his Miami aesthetic dermatology clinic. It is easy to understand why. Dermal fillers are minimally-invasive, safe, and extremely effective at counteracting volume loss that is a natural part of aging and a primary cause of wrinkles.

We offer many types of dermal fillers for our patients, all of which can help you look and feel younger, including Juvéderm. But what is Juvéderm and how is different than the other dermal fillers available at our clinic?

What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is an FDA-approved dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid that restores volume to the skin, lifting and smoothing wrinkles and other fine lines. There are two types of Juvéderm fillers we offer that are used to resolve different issues: Juvéderm Voluma and Juvéderm Volbella.

Juvéderm Voluma is a safe, effective gel that restores volume to the skin and smooths away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is also the first FDA-approved dermal filler proven safe and effective for persons of color. Juvéderm gel has a smooth consistency, allowing for easy injections and instant, natural-looking results. No pre-testing is needed for this procedure, and it usually lasts 18-24 months.

This procedure is commonly used to treat the glabellar lines between the forehead and the nasolabial folds. We also use Juvéderm dermal filler in procedures such as Facial Contouring, Cheek Augmentation, Neck Rejuvenation, Hand Rejuvenation, Ear Lobe Rejuvenation, Nose Recontouring, and Chest/Cleavage Rejuvenation.

While Juvéderm Voluma is used to add volume to the skin, Juvéderm Volbella is designed specifically to enhance the volume of the lips. Dr. Busso was among the first cosmetic physicians to introduce Juvéderm Volbella to patients in the U.S. It contains lidocaine for more comfortable treatment, and the results last for up to a year.

It can help

  • Diminish vertical lip lines
  • Accentuate the border of your lips
  • Make lips fuller, and enhance the of the “cupid’s bow” at the top of the upper lip

Differences Between Juvéderm and Other Dermal Fillers

The active ingredient in Juvéderm is hyaluronic acid. This naturally existing sugar molecule is found in nearly every living organism. In the body, hyaluronic acid performs a number of important functions, like lubricating body joints, assisting with the transport of nutrients, and maintaining hydration within the skin.

Many other fillers we offer rely on different active ingredients. For example, Radiesse is an injectable form of calcium hydroxylapatite, which is a naturally-occurring mineral suspended in a water-based gel. Sculptra is an injectable form of poly-L-lactic acid.

What makes hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Juvéderm so attractive is that they are made out of a natural molecule already found in our skin, which maximizes compatibility and minimizes any chance of a negative reaction. This makes Juvéderm particularly popular with first-time patients.
